L'Adolescente di Michelangelo From 15 December 2018 to 10 March 2019, rhinoceros gallery exceptionally hosted The Adolescent, a sculpture by Michelangelo, coming from the collections of the State Hermitage Museum of St. Petersburg. The exhibition, with free admission, marks the beginning of a three-year collaboration between Alda Fendi - Esperimenti Foundation and the famous Russian museum. This prestigious agreement comes from the desire to increase cultural relations between the two countries. The Adolescent, that was in Rome for the first time, is the first of the Russian Museum's masterpieces exhibited in the rhinoceros palace: a building designed by Jean Nouvel for Alda Fendi. Probably, the sculpture was created around 1530, during the most troubled months of the artist's life, at the fall of the Republic of Florence. The incompleteness of this artwork, referring to Michelangelo's famous concept of the unfinished, makes it the object of multiple interpretations. Moreover, it is one of the few marbles signed by the sculptor that are preserved abroad. The sculpture arrived in Russia on the initiative of Tsarina Catherine II who bought it from an English banker in 1787. The lighting of this figure of a crouching young man was conceived by Vittorio and Francesca Storaro, to highlight the creative power of the great master. During its three-month stay, the exhibition hosted around 22.000 visitors.
