The Fondazione Alda Fendi – Esperimenti promotes a new fascinating initiative. Starting from the 15th December the masterpiece Saints Peter and Paul painted by El Greco from the Hermitage collections of St.Petersburg will be exhibited at the rhinoceros gallery. The entrance is free. This choice reflects the Fondazione Alda – Esperimenti aim: the free entrance to their initiatives is a symbolic and clear message, because culture must be a World Heritage. The exhibition, that will be hosted from December 15th, 2019 to March 15th, 2020, sets the second appointment of the three years’ collaboration between Fondazione Alda Fendi – Esperimenti and the famous Russian Museum. This prestigious agreement was born from the desire to increase the cultural relationship between Italy and Russia, through the exhibition of masterpieces from the State Hermitage Museum of St.Petersburg. After the great success of last year with the exhibition of the “Crouching Boy” by Michelangelo, with more than 22.000 visitors, the choice of this year is a real tribute to the city of Rome.
Saints Peter and Paul is an emblematic artwork of the fully mature style of El Greco, recognised in the history of painting as the greatest painter of Spain in the XVI century.
The two apostels are represented together, according to ancient custom, inside a dark space (a quite exceptional thing for the greek painter) and with the traditional iconography: Peter with the key of the Gate of Paradise, and Paul while he is holding an open book, in relation with the letters written for the first Christian communities.
